Go-to safety stack for trail days

I’ve been running a Garmin inReach Mini 2 with Gaia GPS this fall, firing preset check-ins every 60 minutes — it’s been rock solid and kept a nervous guest calm when a squall hit at 2:30 pm. What comms + mapping combo are you trusting for guided hikes, and any tips for smooth SOS escalation and offline maps?

I’m also on a Mini 2 + Gaia, and I bumped your “every 60 minutes” preset to 30 when weather’s building, plus I use a custom Quick Text with trail name, party size, and next waypoint so IERCC has context if SOS escalates. For offline, I pre-download Gaia Topo + USGS at zoom 12–13 and flip Airplane Mode to verify tiles before leaving; the satellite layer’s been flaky for me so I skip it. I also send an inReach test message the night before to confirm routing to my contacts and IERCC.

One thing that’s smoothed SOS for me: I pre-fill my inReach SOS profile with permit number, vehicle plate, party size, med notes, and the local SAR dispatch so IERCC isn’t waiting on details if a squall like your 2:30 pm one forces fast decisions. The only catch is keeping it current — I update it when I build the Gaia route and grab offline tiles, then my preset pings include the MapShare link instead of just “every 60 minutes.” Do you embed your MapShare URL in the preset so guests can self-check progress?

CalTopo offline (MapBuilder Topo + slope angle shading) paired with Garmin Explore works well for me, and I mirror the route so the MapShare link stays live for my co‑guide — like a breadcrumb trail they can read. For SOS, my main preset includes coords in USNG and decimal plus a simple “GREEN/AMBER/RED” status and the local dispatch number, so a contact can escalate if I can’t type; you doing anything similar?
